This project began as a simple idea: to create a bright, friendly alphabet book that celebrates animals from A to Z.
As an illustrator, I love projects that combine storytelling, learning, and playful design - and an ABC animal book felt like the perfect way to bring those elements together. In this post, I’m sharing a look behind the scenes at the illustrations, the style choices, and how the book came to life.
The goal of this book was to create something visually engaging for toddlers and early readers, while keeping the illustrations clear, warm, and easy to read. Each letter pairs with an animal illustration designed to feel friendly and expressive rather than overly detailed or realistic. I wanted the book to feel calm, inviting, and timeless - something children would enjoy returning to again and again.
For this book, I worked in a clean, cartoon-inspired style with soft shapes and approachable character designs. Each animal was illustrated to feel distinct, while still belonging to the same visual world. I focused on simple, readable silhouettes, consistent line weight and proportions, gentle expressions and rounded features, and a cohesive colour palette across all letters.
Below are some of the finished illustrations from the ABC animal alphabet book. Each letter introduces a new animal, helping children connect sounds, letters, and imagery in a fun and accessible way.
Each illustration was designed to be easy for young readers to recognise, with friendly expressions and clear shapes that support early learning. When illustrating for children, clarity matters just as much as creativity. I made deliberate choices to avoid visual clutter and keep the focus on each animal, while keeping the overall feel playful, warm, and engaging.
Projects like this remind me why I love illustrating for children’s books. There’s something special about creating artwork that supports learning, imagination, and joy all at once. Alphabet books may seem simple on the surface, but they require careful thought around consistency, pacing, and visual storytelling, and I really enjoyed that challenge.
This ABC animal alphabet book has been a joyful project to work on, and I’m excited to share the illustrations as part of my ongoing illustration journey.
Thank you for reading — and for taking a look inside my illustration process.
